10 Upcoming Horror Games To Be Released in 2015 and 2016

For some strange reason people love to get scared. For years, the horror game industry has been provided people with the frights and giggles they’ve been wanting. If you’ve never played a horror game before or you’re simply looking for a new game to play, check out this list of our top ten upcoming horror games for 2015 and 2016.

10. Hunger

This next upcoming horror game is being created by Tarsier Studios. If you were to ever pick a game developer to make the next greatest horror game, the creators of Little Big Planet would probably not be the first one you picked. I’ve watched the trailer though and it looks so good!

The game style and gameplay looks almost identical to Little Big Planet, but this time you’re in control of a little girl trying to get out of an underwater facility where everything is huge, and everything wants you dead. This game is a must try for all horror fans out there!

9. Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil Revelations 2. There is currently nothing released for the 7th installment.

That this game will even exist can be much attributed to the success of Resident Evil Revelations 2. The series has been highly popular since the very beginning even though the franchise has had its controversies.

Resident Evil 7 was just barely outed as a 2015 title, but still next to nothing is known about the game. Youtube is full of trolls making fake trailers and claiming to be the real deal, but until Capcom gives us more information or releases a trailer themselves, we won’t know anything.

8. Outlast 2

I have a slight hunch that the man isn't friendly

The first Outlast game gave you control of a journalist who might’ve been a little over zealous in his work since he decided to infiltrate a locked down asylum based on a tip he had received. Of course the asylum was full of murderous lunatics, freaky cultists, and a whole lot of dead bodies. You couldn’t fight and so your only options were to run and hide.

That is what makes this game so great though, in many other horror games you can simply remove the scary factor by standing up and unleashing a flurry of bullets into the creepy monster, but not in this game. The sequel will take place in a different location with new characters, but it will undoubtedly have the same true horror feel to it.

7. Dead Island 2

Don’t you hate it when you’re on vacation and you’ve partied so hard that the world ends while you’re sleeping off your hangover? That was basically the plot for the first Dead Island game. You wake up and everyone on the paradise island you’re on has turned to zombies. Well this time it’s not on some island, it’s in California. The military has quarantined the entire state, and I’m willing to bet that you’ll take on the role of some poor fellow who is stuck inside.

Dead Island is characterized by being a very interactive open world game. In the first game you could go anywhere you want and use anything you wanted to bash in zombie brains. The sequel will hopefully be both bigger and better. The game is set for a fall release of this year.

6. Dayz (final release)

All you've got is your backpack and whatever you can find on the ground

It is hard to believe that DayZ is still in early access since it is already so popular. The game is an open world survival horror with little to no plot. The main purpose of the game is to team up with other players and survive in the hostile world. As you explore the huge world you’ll find things that will help you to survive.

Again, this game is still in early access so don’t buy it yet unless you intend to support the development and deal with the massive bugs and interruptions of gameplay. However, when this game launches for good you can expect it to be a massive commercial success.

5. Killing Floor 2

Looks like Uncle Bill and Aunt Betsie don't you think?

Killing Floor 1 was originally just a mod to the Unreal series, but the game’s popularity has led to this sequel being put in production. The game is in early access now and you can get it on Steam. The plot is incredibly simple: Zombie virus wipes out everyone, government is paralyzed, and you’re completely on your own. Killing Floor 2 takes place only a month after the first game, but that really doesn’t matter because plot doesn’t have much to do with these games.

You play together with up to 6 people in various maps and fight off waves of zombies. If you die you’ll respawn at the end of the wave. The game ends when all players are dead before a wave ends. The game is very fast paced and exciting, and a wee bit terrifying as well.

4. SOMA

Frictional Games, the same company that created the Amnesia series, is back with another horror game called SOMA. Not much is known about the plot at this time except that the game will be a survival horror that takes place in the underwater research facility called PATHOS-2. Underwater settings are the worst because you can’t escape them.

Even though we don’t know much about this game, the trailers are certainly leaving us wanting more. This game is definitely one of the most anticipated upcoming horror games.

3. Call of Cthulhu

C'thulu needs his sacrifices!

This might be the game you never heard of. Well received by critics but a commercial failure. The company went bankrupt and the planned sequels were never released unfortunately. While this is now a bit of an older game, it is definitely worth checking out if you want to get the creepy going.

You take on the role of detective Jack Walters as he goes on the absolute worst job of his life. He is trying to solve a missing person’s case which leads him to the town of Innsmouth. The town is cut off from the rest of the world and is full of C’thulu worshiping cultists. It sounds like it would make for a good time don’t you think?

2. Doom 4

No one is really sure what is going on with this title. Doom 4, actually titled just Doom, is neither a sequel nor a reboot to the original franchise… it is something else. The game has been restarted once due to being trapped in “development hell” back in 2011. A teaser trailer was released not too long ago as an effort to shut rumors down that the game was in danger of being cancelled. When we will see this game and what it will really be about is anyone's guess

However, the teaser trailer did look completely bomb! The game, if it is released with any sort of resemblance to the original Doom franchise is bound to be awesome. The essential theme of the entire series has been to get bigger guns and blow up aliens, and if Doom 4 maintains that it will probably do well.

1. Dying Light

Good Night and Good Luck

While Dying Light has already been released and isn’t technically an “upcoming” horror game, it was so great and unique that you have to check it out anyway. The game is like the love baby between Dead Island and Mirror’s Edge. The game incorporates the same first person parkour gameplay mechanics that exists in Mirror’s Edge, but couples it with a huge open world full of Zombies and thugs. What more could you want?

You take the role of an agent infiltrating a city that has been quarantined due to the zombie outbreak. Your objective is to find a certain criminal and retrieve dangerous data, but you quickly get wrapped up in helping the survivors and soon your objective becomes fuzzy.

The game contains plenty of jump scares, unfair encounters that will ensure you die at least once, and plenty of dark tunneling with scary creeps surrounding you. The game definitely has a horror feel too it, especially at night when the big bad zombies come out.

This concludes our list for the best upcoming horror games, or at least horror games that you should play if you haven’t yet. Leave a comment below and let us know which horror game is your favorite.
