Witchers, Mordor, and Dragons! Oh My!

The Dragon Age series has long since taken its place in the Hall of Fame of RPG’s. Wickedly fun and completely engrossing, Inquisition is a worthy successor to the Dragon Age name. But what of other games like Inquisition? What games fill that same need?

Look no further! Here is a list of eleven great games like Inquisition! Some fill your need for dragon slaying or perhaps give you a fantastic story, or maybe they’re just crazy fun. So which games made the cut? Which game topped the list? And which game is your favorite?

11) Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor

See Middle Earth from a different perspective.

We all know the story of The Lord of The Rings. We know Frodo and Sam, we’ve followed Gandalf, we’ve cheered for Aragorn. But Shadows of Mordor shies away from the Middle Earth stories we know in favor for a new journey. In Shadows of Mordor, we follow a man named Talion, who is voiced by the great Troy Baker himself.

Taking place in the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Shadow of Mordor has received shining reviews. Paired with a unique combat style that weaves itself into the story, Shadow of Mordor is definitely worth time played.

10) Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag

Who doesn’t want to be a pirate?

Rising from the ashes of the troublesome Assassin’s Creed 3, Black Flag took what worked from the series and expanded upon it in a fantastic way. In what some call the “greatest pirate game ever made”, Black Flag took sailing to the next level while still keeping the outstanding combat and dynamic exploration of the previous Assassin’s Creed games.

Set in the Caribbean we follow Edward Kenway, grandfather to Connor Kenway, through his struggle in the pirating world. As in other Assassin’s Creed games, Black Flag weaves historical figures into its setting and in this case, it’s historical pirates. Best part? Black Flag can be picked up for pretty cheap and is across all platforms.

9) Risen 3

If you loved exploring the well-detailed lands of Inquisition, you’ll love Risen 3.

Risen 3, like Black Flag and Inquisition, is a game seeking to redeem its series from the troubled games before and many have said that the game does just that. Though not without its criticisms, Risen 3 takes the series in a new direction while keeping the same Risen feel to it.

Risen 3 truly shines in its environmental detail. The island feel of the game lends itself so well to a gorgeous environment around you while you’re swinging your sword around. From small villages to lovely beaches, Risen 3 has something for everyone’s exploring needs.

8) Lord of the Rings: War in the North

See Middle Earth in its first M-Rated game.

Unlike Shadow of Mordor, which is set in between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, War in the North is a Middle Earth story set at the same time as Frodo has the One Ring. Though without a doubt, the game shines in its setting, there’s so much more to the game than simply being set in Middle Earth.

Where War in the North truly shines is its unique character system. Similar to Trine War in the North gives you three separate characters to choose to control each with their own unique abilities. Between the abilities of the elven spellcaster, the dwarven warrior, or the human ranger, there’s something for everyone.

7) Elder Scrolls Online

Explore Tamriel alongside your friends.

For years fans of The Elder Scrolls series begged for some way to play with their friends in Tamriel, and now there’s finally a way to do that. The Elder Scrolls Online allows you and your friends to explore Tamriel 1,000 years before the events of Skyrim even take place. Though the events take place well before Skyrim, the problems Tamriel faces are much the same.

The game has been steadily improving since launch, and now with One Tamriel released it’s even easier to jump in the game. Zone levels have been removed, as well as Alliance restrictions. Go where you wish and level where you wish!

6) Ryse: Son of Rome

A thrilling journey into the past.

Set in an alternate version of Rome, Ryse: Son of Rome follows the story of Marius Titus, a man set on avenging his family. From there, the story uses its Roman backdrop to hook you into Marius’ tale. Though the story is strong, where Rome truly shines is its graphics.

As a launch title for the XBOX - ONE the game was meant to show off what the new system could do, and it does that perfectly. With fantastic environmental detail and flowing combat Ryse: Son of Rome is well worth the time.

5)The Technomancer

See Mars in a different way in The Technomancer.

With The Technomancer we return to the same universe as Mars: War Logs, a setting where humans have settled Mars. Corporations arose on the newly settled planet and began warring for power. One such corporation is “Abundance” where our hero Zachariah comes from.

Though there has been criticism over the combat The Technomancer is a solid attempt at recreating the magic found in the Bioware games of the 2000’s. Fight alongside companions, delve into story, make choices that affect your character’s morality, all the while relishing in the fantastic cyberpunk style of the game.

4) Dark Souls 3

Ready to be challenged beyond your wildest dreams?

Though the game is visually stunning, Dark Souls 3 truly shines in its fantastically challenging combat. There are very few games that will give you the same enjoyment as Dark Souls 3, the game is difficult but its reward comes from mastering the difficult combat. That paired with the fantastic story makes for a truly great experience.

Dark Souls 3 is very similar to another game by FromSoftware Bloodborne which employed the same difficult combat and stunning visuals. Though Bloodborne is more grounded in its dark gothic nature, Dark Souls 3 takes a turn towards the elements of fantasy. Critically acclaimed and wickedly fun Dark Souls 3 should be on the list of any gamer.

3) Dragon’s Dogma

Open-world at it’s best. That's Dragon's Dogma.

When you’re talking about great open-world games, it’s hard not to think of Dragon’s Dogma on that list. With glowing reviews and Capcom at its back, Dragon’s Dogma was destined for greatness. Now, with the release of the PC version early last year, you can experience this console game on your PC as well.

Though the Skyrim-esque open-world feel is certainly one of it’s strongest points, Dragon’s Dogma also features a great combat system and story to back it. Pairing that great combat with some seriously epic boss fights Dragon’s Dogma is a well-fitted game for any lover of the RPG genre.

2) The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

I tell you, I tell you, The Dragonborn comes.

Quite possibly one of the greatest games of the past ten years, Skyrim stands as tall as the mountains players struggle to climb in game. Skyrim is timeless. A game that keeps renewing itself not only with mods but has just recently released a brand new Special Edition that remastered Skyrim’s graphics without needing to use mods.

This wildly successful game is the end result of years improving the things that make The Elder Scrolls series great. Spend hours just wandering the land, delve into the deepest dungeons, fight dragons and take your place as The Dragonborn. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

1) Witcher 3

Join Geralt for one last adventure.

Very few times in our gaming lives to we see a new IP make as big of a splash as the Witcher series has. The Witcher series is everything we love in RPG’s and then some. The setting is engrossing, the combat is dynamic, and the story is some of the best writing in all of gaming.

While Witcher 3 provides hours of gaming alone, CD Projekt has also released two huge expansions to add on to Geralt’s last adventure. One of which, Blood and Wine, won the coveted title for RPG of the Year at The Game Awards. When a game’s expansion wins RPG of the year, you’re doing something right.
