Don’t Miss Out On These 10 Best Horror Movies Coming in 2016

Those of us who are fans of horror games usually also enjoy horror movies. We are always on the lookout for horror films to watch. After all, we need something frightening to watch between game releases. Apparently we are masochists. Luckily, in 2016 there is a solid lineup of horror movies hitting theatres.

Nothing beats sitting in a movie theatre and watching the newest horror films. Something about the big screen, big sound, and audience reactions immerses us in the experience. So grab your popcorn and prepare for 2016’s reel of scares.

Here are ten horror movies to watch in 2016.

1. The Forest

Based on the famous suicide forest at the base of Mount Fuji.

Some of the best horror movies are based on real life events. In Japan, on the northwest side of Mount Fuji lies Aokigahara Forest, also known as Suicide Forest. This particular patch of forest has a long dark history of attracting suicidal individuals. Suicides are so common in this area that there are many signs posted around the paths which encourage people to seek help rather than take their lives.

When Sara Price receives a call from Japanese police stating that her sister has gone into the forest alone … well the reason is obvious. Sara is determined to search the forest for her sister despite all the locals insisting that the forest is cursed. Nobody ever listens to the locals when they start talking about curses.

The Forest is the first horror film to start off 2016. It is scheduled for release on January 8th.

2. The Witch

One family stands alone on the frontier against a witch’s curse.

Director Robert Eggers is making his directorial debut with The Witch. This movie follows the story of a Puritan family living on their isolated farm in New England. When the family’s youngest son disappears, the father (Ralph Ineson) and his wife (Kate Dickie) blame their oldest daughter (Anya Taylor-Joy).

The parents accuse the young girl of practicing witchcraft in order to spite the family. Soon after, things take a turn for the worst. Whether the threat is real or imagined is not made clear in the trailer. It will be interesting to see if the strange occurrences are truly something demonic, or a result of superstitious hysteria. My money is on the hysteria.

The Witch officially debuted at the 2015 Sundance Festival, and will get a full theatrical release February 19, 2016.

3. The Other Side of the Door

When they come back, they do not come back alone.

Six years after the tragic death of her son Oliver, Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies) travels to a temple in order to speak with her son one last time. Scattering Oliver’s ashes around the temple will allow him to speak from behind a door for a short period of time.

There is only one rule, no matter what Oliver says, do not open the door. So naturally, we know where this is headed. Maria opens the door, and chaos ensues. When she opened the door to bring back Oliver, he did not come back alone. Seriously Maria, was that one rule too hard to remember?

Peak behind the other side of the door on March 4, 2016.

4. 10 Cloverfield Lane

At the end of the world, would you be able to live in a bunker with a couple strangers?

Everyone is curious about this year’s follow up to the Cloverfield franchise. Producers have stated that this movie will not be a direct sequel to the 2008 film, but instead a spiritual successor. What does this mean? It means no more shaking hand held camera for the entire film. I know I will be glad not to be subject to motion sickness in the movie theatre.

10 Cloverfield Lane is about three people trapped in an underground fallout bunker built by a man named Howard (John Goodman). He claims that everyone on the surface is dead following a widespread chemical attack, but the other two vault inhabitants begin to have doubts. It quickly becomes clear that Howard is unhinged, and that he has some dark secrets. Meanwhile on the surface, well, you will just have to watch the movie to uncover that mystery.

10 Cloverfield Lane will be released in theatres on March 11, 2016.

5. The Conjuring 2

From the files of Ed and Lorraine Warren comes a whole new tale of terror.

James Wan’s “The Conjuring” left an impression on us in 2013. It was arguably the most entertaining horror film made in the past few years. It was so popular that it received a prequel spin-off movie about everyone’s favorite nightmare fuel doll, Annabelle. That movie was … ok. It certainly did not live up to the high expectations set by the first movie.

This year we are finally getting a direct sequel starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time they are traveling to the UK to investigate a poltergeist in Enfield. Our favorite ghost fighting couple must find a way to exorcise the ghost in order to save the life of two young children. As an added bonus, it has also been rumored that the beginning of this movie will touch on the Warrens’ most famous case, the Amityville Horror. This seems fitting, considering there is also a new Amityville movie in the works.

We all have high expectations for this movie in particular. Let’s hope it lives up to the first movie. The Conjuring 2 will be released in theaters June 10th of 2016.

6. The Purge: Election Year

For 12 hours everything is legal, even murder.

The Purge franchise will be getting its third installment this summer for the July long weekend. James DeMonaco will return once again to further explore the dark future of the US.

In the universe of The Purge all crime is legal once a year. For twelve hours, all emergency services are suspended, and chaos runs rampant in the streets. Since the implementation of the purge, crime rates all through the rest of the year have dropped to all-time lows. On the surface it is the perfect plan, but some individuals, such as Senator Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) want to see it abolished. The senator stands on very dangerous ground. There are some citizens who are not willing to give up their annual murder spree.

The Purge: Election Year will be released July 1st of 2016.

7. Lights Out

Yet another reason to sleep with the lights on.

This is certainly the year of fresh directors. This summer, director David F. Sandberg’s first horror film will be released. He is going to have some stiff competition going up against established horror directors like James Wan.

As a child, Rebecca (Theresa Palmer) was always afraid of monsters in the dark. Now, years later her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is being stalked by a strange monster than can only be seen in the dark. The secret behind the vengeful spirit lies in the past of their mother, and her friend who died years ago. Just from watching the trailer I get the distinct impression that this will be a jump scare heavy movie. They certainly have plenty of opportunity for surprise with how much the lights flicker.

Get ready to sit in a theatre with the lights out this July 22, 2016.

8. Leatherface

How one man became a terrifying legend…

How do you make a horror legend? The upcoming Leatherface will be a prequel movie for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. It will follow Jackson during his teen years and explore the events that turned him from a man to a monster.

I am not sure whether giving Leatherface emotions and motivations will help or hurt the franchise. Many people had mixed feelings when Michael received the same treatment in Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween. In Rob Zombie’s Halloween, a lengthy explanation of Michael Myer’s childhood leading up to his first murder was added. The life of young Michael made up the entire first act of the movie. Some viewers complained that the backstory just made the movie feel bloated. Will an entire movie dedicated to this same concept be interesting and successful? Since Leatherface’s childhood has only ever received a passing glance perhaps it is time to get a look at the man behind the mask. Either way, I am glad they are trying to give their star villain a little more dimension.

Leatherface does not have a set release date as off this posting. We are also awaiting a formal trailer for this movie. The official word is that it will come out sometime in 2016. My money is on a fall release to coincide with Halloween.

9. Before I wake

When dreams become reality, nightmares become deadly.

This fall, Mike Flanagan, director of Oculus is bringing us a new horror film. Originally titled Somnia, Before I Sleep is scheduled to come out this Halloween season.

Married couple, Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane), are left devastated after the death of their son. In order to fill the void left by the death of their child they eventually decide to adopt a young boy named Cody. This should have been their chance to heal and become a happy family once again, but it ends up being their worst nightmare. Cody’s dreams become reality, and his nightmares become a very real threat to the family. I am personally hoping for a Freddy Krueger cameo.

Before I Wake has gone through production hell. This movie’s release date has been rescheduled three times because of production problems, and the production company going bankrupt. Barring any more unexpected problems, Before I wake will hit theatres September 9, 2016.

10. Rob Zombie's 31

Because Rob Zombie needed to give us more reasons to be afraid of clowns.

Anyone here love Devil’s Rejects and House of a 100 Corpses? Everyone ready for another Rob Zombie film featuring Sheri Moon Zombie? Get ready for one of our all-time favorite musician and director to hit the big screen once again.  Please hyperlink purple highlights to wikia page

This movie is set in 1976, shortly before Halloween. A group of carnival workers are traveling across the country in their RV. On their way to their next venue, the performers are attacked and taken hostage. The unfortunate carnies are then forced to play a game. For the next 12 hours, they must make their way through a maze and avoid the psychopaths who are out to torture and murder them. If they can survive the twelve hours they will be set free. Sound familiar to anybody? All the psychopaths need is The Saw’s Puppet on a tricycle.

Rob Zombie’s 31 will be another movie in the lineup of Halloween horror films. Expect to see this guaranteed gore fest in theatres September 16, 2016. There is no teaser trailer currently available for this movie, but photos can be found on the official website can be found here

Why do we love to be scared? We all love that little rush of adrenaline we get from being frightened. There is just something about facing down the things that scare us most which gives us that thrill. Thankfully there is a long list of horror movies to check out in theatres this year.

Which movie do you think will be the horror hit of the year? Let us know!
