11. Resident Evil HD Remaster

Resident Evil HD Gameplay Trailer

Bizarre murders near Raccoon City has prompted an investigation from the S.T.A.R.S. team. After losing contact with the Bravo Team, Alpha Team heads over to investigate.  Soon after, they are forced to take refuge in an abandoned mansion where they must fight off the undead and survive long enough to make their escape.

Those who have play the 2002 Resident Evil will find many similarities in this upgraded version. The puzzles are familiar and the storyline is solid. However, those two points are something that made the first game such an amazing play.

Why mess with a good thing?

An experiment gone wrong.

Take on the role of either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine and get ready to survive. Explore the mansion controlling one of these two in third person perspective. Solve the mystery of what the hell is going on and get out of there!

Updated graphics, enhanced backgrounds, and a widescreen ratio are some of the few polished changes on this remake. The video below compares some of these changes.

10. Outlast

Outlast Trailer

Reporter Miles Upshur is hoping to get the story of a lifetime when he receives a tip that there are experimental procedures occurring at Mount Massive Asylum. With only his notepad and camcorder, he enters the asylum to face the horrors and reveal the truth.

Set in first-person perspective with a “hidden footage” feel to the game, you play as Miles Upshur, a reporter looking to write a big story. Miles, being a reporter and all, isn’t able to fight off the horrors that await him. He can only hide and outsmart them.

I haven’t finished this game. In fact, I didn’t get very far at all before I was scared out of my mind. There’s something about having to use the “night vision” on your camera in order to navigate that just chills me to the core.

So yeah, I’m a chicken.

Jump scare!

9. The Evil Within

The Evil Within Extended Gameplay

Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his colleagues are investigating the scene of a mass murder when they realize that there is also a mysterious supernatural presence with them.

The Evil Within is a third-person psychological survival horror in which you play Sebastian. After witnessing the slaughter of his team, he is knocked unconscious. When he wakes, he finds himself in a distorted reality full of monsters.

He must fight enemies and gather supplies to survive all while trying to solve the mystery behind the powerful and evil force.

Headshot! 100 points!

8. Five Nights at Freddy’s

Five Nights at Freddy’s Gameplay video

During the day, the main attraction at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is animatronic Freddy and his two friends. They’re a fun bunch and the kids love them! At night however, things get a little weird.

You are a night time security guard for Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Your job is to monitor Freddy and his friends to make sure they stay put. Wait. Stay put?

At night, Freddy and his friends like to move around. Before they just damaged the place, but now they’ve got a new toy to play with. You.

You’ve got a limited amount of electricity to keep you safe and sound in your office. Keep your eye on the robots, reserve your power, and survive five nights at Freddy’s.

Freddy Bear wants to play.

7. SOMA

SOMA Gameplay trailer

Cold, alone, and confused, Simon Jarrett wakes up on PATHOS-11, an underwater research facility. He doesn’t know how he got there and even worse, the place appears to have been recently abandoned. Now, he must survive and find the answers.

SOMA is a first-person psychological horror that puts the player against creatures that embody certain themes. You have to delve deep to understand the themes and use this to your advantage to help you solve puzzles and survive.

A good psychological horror like SOMA can’t be explained in a few sentences. In order to really get the feel for the game, you have to play it.

Back away slowly.

6. Killing Floor 2

GameSpot Killing Floor 2 Gameplay

A month ago, a deadly outbreak spread across Europe. Unable to be contained, the fight for survival has begun against the Zeds.

Killing Floor 2 is the sequel to the first-person shooter survival horror Killing Floor. With updated graphics, maps, classes, and skills, Killing Floor 2 is shaping out to be an incredible sequel.

Play alone or with up to 5 other friends and defeat waves of Zeds that come through. But beware, each wave you gives way to a harder wave with more difficult Zeds. If you make it until the final wave, be prepared to fight the boss.

Don’t let him get too close.

5. Dying Light

Dying Light Launch Trailer

The world has been overrun by the infected. Gather supplies, craft weapons, and defend against the growing number of zombies.

Dying Light is a first-person zombie apocalypse survival game set in an expansive open world. With mainly melee combat and parkour mechanics, it is a fast paced survival that puts you against the zombies.

The game has a day and night cycle as well, making it realistic. During the day it’s best to scavenge and build because the infected are slow and easily maneuvered. At night… well let’s say they become more dangerous.

You can choose to play the game alone or with up to 4 players in the co-op mode. For me, I would play this with friends. I find survival horror to be one of the most enjoyable co-op games.

This is the end.

4. 7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die Alpha 8 Trailer

Nuclear war has left the world in ruins. Now, overrun by mutants, you must scavenge for food, water, supplies, and shelter in order to survive.

Another first-person survival game, 7 Days to Die takes place after a nuclear war. You have survived, but the rest of the inhabitants are either dead or mutated. Your goal is survival.

You must find shelter and scavenge your way through dangerous mutants, which get stronger as each day passes. They have their own agenda, which is to find you and destroy you.

7 Days to Die is available to play in multiplayer as well. So play with your friends on your own hosted server, or join another server and find survivors to play with.

Find shelter and avoid the horde.

3. The Forest

The Forest Trailer

A plane crash has left you stranded on an island. A group of cannibals have taken your son. You must survive long enough to find him.

The Forest is sandbox survival horror available in both single-player and multiplayer. You play as an unnamed male character and after the plane crash you must immediately begin scavenging to find items such as medicine and food.

With your handy survival manual in hand you begin setting up a base, making weapons, acquiring food, and finding a way to survive the first night. Soon, you find yourself face to face with visitors, who aren’t exactly… well… civil.

The teeth of your victims: a fashion statement.

2. Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation Launch Trailer

The disappearance of Amanda Ripley’s mother, Ellen Ripley, has plagued her for years. Now, she has the chance to know the truth of what truly happened.

Set 15 years after Alien, you play as Amanda Ripley in a first-person perspective. You are informed that a flight recorder of the Nostromo spacecraft has been located. As her daughter, you are offered a place on the team to retrieve the device.

The mission will put you on a space station and you will complete objectives while encountering enemies that you must fight, or if you are able, avoiding them altogether. Will you finally find the answers about the disappearance of your mother?

Behind you.

1. Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 Teaser Trailer

The Green Flu pandemic has created a horde of zombie-like creatures in the world. Four survivors must fight their way from Savannah, Georgia all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana. Will they make it or will some be lost along the way?

The sequel to Left 4 Dead gives us four new survivors to play: Coach, Rochelle, Nick, and Ellis. The game is a first-person shooter that is heavily dependent on co-op play. There are five campaigns, with each containing three to five smaller levels within each.

In order to survive, you must work as a team. It’s important to protect each other, especially since there are some mutant zombies that have gained special abilities, making them stronger than the average zombie. L4D2 has three new special zombies called The Charger, The Spitter, and The Jockey.

What are you waiting for? Get your friends, get your guns, and get out there!

Is there anything worse than a clown zombie?
